When I lived in Tokyo in 95, McDonald’s was the place to be if you were a high school student with a moment of free time. Or 5 hours.
Stores were densely packed in the city, multistory, and in areas like Shibuya you could find the golden arches on 2,3, or 4 corners. It was a gold mine.
But, questions were being asked about why high school kids were getting so fat, about the role of western food (McDonald’s and KFC got about the same treatment) in Japanese society… and 13 years later, the same questions are being raised in China – as SexybeijingTV’s McBeijing explores.
As an American, I am drawn to the golden arches at times, but I must admit that I am less so now that I am in China and not driving my car.. but as someone who spent 4 years on an organic diet (I ate meat – but no preservatives or refined sugars) I have come to understand the relationship between food and health.
and this is where I think McDonald’s and others will eventually have to answer questions that they are not forced to in their home countries. Of course, everyone has the ability to make a choice, but I did find Danwei’s comparison of menus to be quite interesting, and while lawyers and lobbyists may be able to shield fast food from difficult questions and regulations, I am curious if the same protection exists here… or if the legal risks to McDonald’s or others is greater.
Something to think about if you are a brand whose products may have a measure of controversy in other countries.
