This November and December, the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) and once again successfully gathered some of Shanghai’s leading companies for participation in its annual CSR program, Make a Difference Day. The goal of the initiative is to support charitable activities and aid underserved communities in the city with more corporate involvement, as well as provide a CSR participation platform for Amcham member companies. The most coordinated effort by any of the business organizations to promote and foster CSR awareness in Shanghai, Make a Difference Day’s success set an ambitious benchmark for next year’s efforts to surpass.

Following a hugely successful 2005 program, AmCham, in partnership with local charity Hands On Shanghai, expanded this year’s Make a Difference Day CSR initiative to community service institutions and new areas of need. Deloitte, GE, Goodyear and Manpower crews, armed with supplies donated by B&Q, unleashed a fury of cleaning, painting, decorating and renovating on five floors of the Shanghai Social Welfare Institute. Volunteers from Goodyear visited the Le Qun Social Worker Service for interactive education with migrant children, while others from Ashland Valvoline and Corning visited Shanghai Children’s Medical Center.

Briggs & Stratton contributed as well, opening its factory doors to Hands On Shanghai’s Rising Stars mentor program for a view of the innards of a cutting-edge manufacturing operation. In total, more than 20 corporate partners engaged in 13 Make a Difference Day activities, furnishing nearly 1000 volunteer hours in service to the community.

Make a Difference Day delivered a visible impact on both Shanghai’s underserved communities and the corporate volunteers involved. “We want to be an integral part of the Chinese economy and society by giving back to the communities in which we work and live,” noted Dale MacDonald, president, Ashland China, in an interview with Shanghai’s Dragon TV. “This project provides the Ashland team with an opportunity to reach out into the community, and touching those we normally would not see.” All Roads congratulates AmCham on a successful Make a Difference Day and wishes great success in promoting CSR in Shanghai and across China in years to come.
