If there is one point that I have worked to hammer home with respect to the trade relationship between the US and China, it is that trade statistics were skewed, they were being used incorrectly, and that changes needed to be made.

and in a recent report (Full report, highlights) to congress, the GAO (US Government Accountability Office) agrees.

Undertaking a full review of the recent USTR Top Down report on China, the GAO was asked to

(1) evaluate USTR’s annual China trade compliance reports to Congress and the degree to which they present information necessary to fully understand China’s compliance situation and (2) examine the status of the plans presented in USTR’s February 2006 top-to-bottom report.
