Our newest addition to second and third tier news, the Changshu Economic Development Zone, is one of those zones that is benefiting from its proximity to Shanghai and is still offering incentives and land prices not found in Suzhou.

CEDZ Polytechnic School finished autumn enrollment of 758 students in 15 disciplines. Main courses include CNC operation, machining, electrical & mechanical engineering, chemistry, logistics, accounting, information technology etc. There are 6 designated classes to foster laborers for foreign companies in CEDZ.


Wal Mart, global retail giant, opened its 20,000m2 outlet in downtown Changshu. Changshu is now home to 5 global retailer. Wal Mart Changshu store is so far the only one opened by Wal Mart in a Chinese county-level city.


Changshu jumped to 22nd rank on “Forbes list of best business city in mainland China” from 38th position last year. Forbes evaluation system includes private entrepreneurial vitality, market size and potential, quality, operating costs, transportation convenience and several other indicators.


UPM-KYMMENE(CHANGSHU)PAPER INDUSTRY CO.,LTD passed the environmental impact assessment by Ministry of Environmental Protection for phase 2 expansion. UPM’s endeavor in environmental protection has been acknowledged by the Ministry. UPM recently invested USD50 million in desulfurization installation and upgraded the in-use environmental facilities. It is to reach the desulfurization rate over 90% and keep the COD level below 50mg/L. UPM will build a sewage treatment plant with daily capacity of 33,000ton and lauch a neutral water recycling system with a daily capacity of 5000tons.


A sports park is being built in CEDZ riverside new city.It covers a land of 8400m2 with total investment of RMB35 million. There will be a 9-hole driving range attached to the park.The project was started in February this year.


Changshu Xinhai Construction Material Co.,Ltd started pilot production on the newly established pickling line and cold rolling line. Another cold rolling line will be launched in September.Xinhai Construction Material was invested with USD60 million by China Metal Group, which has three other subsidiaries in CEDZ. The group has a total of over 500 million investment in CEDZ.


CEDZ HR bureau organized a labor fair offering 1205 vacancies to then-farmers who have been relocated for the development of CEDZ. The job offer came from 50 foreign companies in the zone and neighboring private companies. 400 local villagers who received pre-work training from local labor authority entered labor agreement with the companies.

    Thanks for the CEDZ introduction.
    Because of my background, I gravitate to bandwidth infrastructure first. ISDN is very dated technology, and should not be mentioned. ADSL is really basic bandwidth which most Chinese economic development zones should not mention.
    What is really needed are fractional T1 and T1 lines.
    There is a direct relationship between bandwidth and application development speed and efficiency, so if the CEDZ management got that, it would be a big boost for them.
