An Inside Look into Bribery in China

During my interview of Jay Boyle last month, he made a point about guanxi that I think was a powerful statement:
Guanxi either retires or it goes to jail
so, when reading the recent Caijing article Breaking the Bribery Cycle in Chongqing, I was reminded of just how true this was.
It is a topic that has been discussed & written about by many , it is a topic that the party is trying to address at the highest levels, and through this article you will gain an insight into the scale of the roots of corruption

[…] Rich passes on one of the best lines I’ve ever heard regarding guanxi: Guanxi either retires or it goes to jail […]

Thanks for the kudos Rich!
Actually this comes from my standard advice I give to all of the starry eyed people that showed up last month and now have the deal of the century based on their newly found JV’s business partner and his Guanxi.
Guanxi gets promoted, retires or thrown in jail. So you need to have a fundamentally sound business reason to do a business deal.
When I first came to China the country was full of consultants with 10 years of China experience that were sinophiles but had no business training they were all about the guanxi. I could not begin tell you about the poor advice they gave.

It is just good advice, and comes from your experience in China. I would argue that your level of advice is still in short supply here, and the kudos is all yours!
