Geely Releases the GE!

While many attendees of the Shanghai Auto Show may be looking to learn more about China’s electronic cars, the latest GEELY model release should be proof enough that one of the best methods to seeing if others are copying your IPis to take a trip to trade shows.

Not to be confused with the American firm GE, or the the rolls Royce Phatum, this product  is big brother to the Geely CK, MK, and FC represents a quantum leap for Geely.. a jump I am sure more than a few IP laywers will be taken a closer at.

The GEELY GE everybody.

UPDATE: CNN just covered this story, and CEO of Rolls Royce seemingly laughed off the Geely attempt to copy their car saying they were a pinnacle brand whose quality could not be matched.  following that, CNN cut to Geely’s representative who (with a straight face) said it was their original concept, and they had the drawings to prove it.

What makes it even funnier is that I realized through the interview that the hood ornament on the GE looks just like the Rolls hood ornament.  Perhaps they would have been better off with a GE CFL?

HA! How to make a laughing stock out of yourself. For people that do not know Geely (as most of their stuff does not pass border inspection yet) they are maker of low end cars that are not considered eyecandy.

Besides the Geely owners, friends or family, I would find it hard to believe they would sell this to anynone else in the mainland.

A nice example of wasteful wannabe spending. Common, building a quality brand takes more than this. If you want to serve the bottom and the top end of the market, at least give it another name (either at the bottom or at the top) and do not try to upgrade bottom up.

NO ONE BUYS AN EXPENSIVE PRODUCT FROM A LOW END BRAND

Do not get me wrong, Geely has come a long way and they are showing some interesting concepts in Shanghai. The car itself could even be of good quality but do not try to seriously defend this as your own design.

Sorry, Geely does have a brand plan! http://www.chinacartimes.com/2009/03/30/the-geely-plan/#more-5809

Too bad someone forgot to tell them not to use the Geely brand on each individual brand. Link shows some more models being launched in Shanghai as well.

    Ruud.

That plan is brilliant. It is an IP lawyer’s dream!

Amazing just how many of their original designs look just like products in the market already.

It will be interesting to see if this draws a national response. GEELY just made China’s auto industry look like chumps.

As a Chinese, I am shocked and ashamed. This Geely thing on the autoshow will show nothing to the world but how naive they are. Trying to build an internationally brand is not simply copying others’ work. WHAT A SHAME! They should be cut out of any autoshow in the future.
