While down in HK a couple weeks back, I picked up Leslie Chang’s book Factory Girls.  It was one of the books that I had been waiting to find an opportunity to read, and it was worth the wait.  A book of interviews, observations, and personal history, this book did a great job of personalizing the women who have moved from the country to work in China’s cities.

It was a book that while I was reading found myself thinking back to a couple years back when I was returning to Shanghai from Hangzhou and commenting to my client on two girls who had clearly both landed in Shanghai for their first time.  They were making their way through the station with backpacks on, and each holding onto the handle of a bag probably heavier than either of them. … and the look of terror meeting excitement was all over their faces as they grasped the gravity of the situation.  that no matter where they were from, they were now in Shanghai, and they only had a few hours to work out the rest of their lives.

Pick it up.  you’ll be glad you did.
